The series, inspired by a New Yorke magazine article on Anna Sorokin, also stars Julia Garner and Laverne Cox.
The next Shondaland series is just weeks away. Shonda Rhimes second Netflix effort (and the first she created herself), Inventing Anna, is set to drop on the streaming service in February.
With shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, How To Get Away with Murder and most recently Bridgerton, it’s safe to say Rhimes is one of the most influential creators on TV. As theGrio previously reported, she has taken about four years since her lucrative Netflix deal to drop a series of her own. Now, fans will finally get a chance to see what she has been up to, and by the looks of the trailer, it certainly won’t disappoint.
Rhimes’ latest series is based on the New York Magazine article “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People” by Jessica Pressler. The article details the real-life story of Anna Sorokin, a Russian woman who posed as a German heiress Anna Delvey. Sorokin was eventually found guilty of theft and grand larceny back in 2019. Pressler serves as an executive producer on the series.
The official series synopsis reads, “In Inventing Anna, a journalist with a lot to prove investigates the case of Anna Delvey, the Instagram-legendary German heiress who stole the hearts of New York’s social scene – and stole their money as well. But is Anna New York’s biggest con woman or is she simply the new portrait of the American dream? Anna and the reporter form a dark, funny love-hate bond as Anna awaits trial and our reporter fights the clock to answer the biggest question in NYC: who is Anna Delvey?”
The series also boasts an impressive cast, with Julia Garner taking on the titular role. Garner won two consecutive Emmy Awards for her role in Ozark, which is also on Netflix. Laverne Cox, who was a vital part of one of Netflix’s first hit shows, Orange is the New Black, joins the series as Kacy Duke, as does Katie Lowes, who fans may remember as Quinn on Scandal.
In a recent cover story from Time Magazine, Rhimes opened up about Inventing Anna and what inspired her to write this series. “She was such a complex, interesting, unknowable person,” she explained. “If she had been a man, would she have gotten in so much trouble? Would people have even been as fascinated by her? If Anna Delvey had been what is typically called a hot chick, would people have been so outraged?”
Inventing Anna drops Feb. 11 on Netflix.
